It can take longer and be more difficult to find a job the older that you are. Some recruiters consider you to be ‘old’ if you are in your forties or fifties, and sometimes even younger.

We all think that we need to watch how much we eat and drink over the festive season, but our advice is look out for your teeth! Crusty bread, pork crackling, toffees, nuts, popcorn, are some of the offending food items that can loosen dental work or put stress on already weakened teeth. Fibrous pieces of meat can be dangerous if they become wedged in between faulty contacts. Sometimes they cause gum problems or even root caries if allowed to remain in place for months. Good brushing and flossing techniques should resolve this and routine visits to the Hygienist. Going out for dinner? Watch out for unsuspecting culprits such as chicken salads that contain any small hidden bones or any Game that may contain hidden shot pellets. Chewing on non-food items can be equally as dangerous! So when writing your Christmas cards beware of the temptation to chew on your pen, and when rushing to tie someone’s hair do not put the hair toggle anywhere near your teeth! Also watch out when removing the labels from new clothing – use scissor not your incisors! Naughty habits like chewing on ice cubes or after a few drinks trying to open a bottle of beer with your teeth will definitely increase your chances of damaging your precious teeth.
A broken or cracked tooth will most probably cause you a very painful toothache. If you have a broken or cracked tooth and you are unable to see your dentist immediately, here are some ways for you to relieve the pain from a toothache caused by a broken or cracked tooth:
· Avoid foods and beverages that are very cold or very hot. Since the dentin layer of the tooth has likely been exposed by the crack or break in the tooth, extremes in temperature may cause pain.
· Avoid foods and beverages that are very high in sugar, or are very acidic.
· Use an over-the-counter pain relief medicine. Never exceed the recommended dose, and check to make sure you are able to take the pain relief medication with any of the other medications you may currently be on. Generally speaking, a pain relief medication that is intended to reduced inflammation works best for dental pain, because most toothaches are caused by an inflammation of the tissues or the inflammation of the nerve. Never put pain relief medication on the tooth or gum tissue, as this could burn the tissue.

BB Cream – is this the new ‘line reduction’ treatment?
I was well and truly sucked into the marketing ploys of a French cosmetic brand recently. After watching the 15th advert for their new so called ‘BB Cream’ I decided I just had to find out more about it! BB cream is known in the cosmetic industry as ‘Blemish Balm’ and has made its way into the UK Cosmetic market after being voted one of the top most liked cosmetic products by East and Southeast Asian women.
Created by a German Dermatology Doctor to help laser surgery patients ‘protect, sooth and refine highly sensitive skin post treatment – the cream is now available to the masses. In a variety of formulations the BB creams can help provide coverage for scars, wrinkles, acne and blemishes as well as multi-functioning as a primer, foundation, moisturizer, sun block, pore minimize and refiner. A miracle product one would assume?
There have been claims that some BB creams have skin whitening or brightening properties and significantly evens out skin tone - some might say that this is a revelation to the beauty industry. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? I had to check it out for myself, of course to share my findings with you all.
I bought my tube of BB Cream from a leading high-street retailer for £9.99 – Reasonable price for a miracle I thought. And, on first impressions I was quite impressed with the coverage, if one is just wanting a light amount of coverage for a ‘work’ day or ‘minimal make up’ day. You apply the product in the same way you would a moisturizer/primer and then continue to apply your make-up, missing out foundation if you wish.
It was certainly apparent that due to the high content of light reflecting particles that my face had gained a youthful glow/sheen (also known as the ‘dewy’ look). But I was a little disappointed that it did not cover my hard earned wrinkles and crow’s feet. I was impressed however, with the way in which it evened out my skin tone. But whether or not this was a miracle cream for the over 30s I wasn’t so sure. Would I recommend it to my friends? Yes. Without a doubt I think this could be the ‘tinted moisturiser’ of the future. I have every faith in the fact that this product would benefit the under 30s but would I buy it for my mother? The answer would be a definite ’no’. Sometimes creams are just never enough! (Sorry Mum).
It has to be said - I lost my faith in creams a long time ago, hence my last article on the joys of Botox! And I do still think there is some great benefits to longer-term more effective beauty treatments, that not only satisfy our beauty fixes but for our purses too! It’s not just Botox that is widely available now. More and more women, especially those in their 40s, 50s and 60s are opting for facial fillers. Facial fillers can last up to 12 months and carried out by a qualified clinician these sorts of treatments can refresh any tired, saggy face in desperate need of a pep talk! Most clinicians will recommend using a good quality skincare product with any additional cosmetic treatment.
There are lots of different options out there for women and men who don’t particularly want to spend thousands by going under the knife to update their looks. If you’re worried, scared or unsure about any of the treatments that we offer, don’t panic – you can book a FREE cosmetic consultation by discussing this with the Dentist and finding out more information. Call us now on 02380 692653.

Ok, so to get the perfect beach body I understand that I need to limit my portion sizes, eat healthy and do lots of exercise – but where is the fun in that? If I want to look good, fresh and youthful – I want something instant, without it including any hard graft or discipline! I’m lazy – what can I say?
I’ve recently found out that quite a few of my friends have been getting line smoothing and line filler treatments and when talking to other people about it – it appears that it is more common than I thought! How can I be missing out on this beauty fix, I thought to myself? I’m usually quite hot on the latest beauty products on the market and have tried every anti-ageing cream under the sun. Needless to say, my endless trial of beauty creams has only ever left me disappointed – apart from one face cream that promised the wonders of the sea, with minerals and active sea algae. That one was quite impressive but the effects only lasted for as long as I wore it for and cost me well over £100 to purchase.
So, I was intrigued – how much does this Botox stuff cost and how long will it last? Do I really need it? Would I notice the difference? After the treatment, would friends stare at me and point at my face, yelling ‘oh my goodness, what have you had done’?
There was only one way of finding out. I booked a free cosmetic consultation at my Dentist Surgery – Thurlow. Yes, that’s right, my Dentist Surgery. I know, very discreet huh? I could get the treatment done and it would look like I just had a routine check-up with my dentist. Plus, who better to administer the treatment than my dentist of 8 years – a qualified, experienced practitioner who has had to study the muscle anatomy of the face to become a dentist in the first place. And seen as the treatment procedures involve injecting my face with a needle – I thought this was probably the safest way to go.
I booked my appointment and before I knew it I was sat in the chair with butterflies in my tummy (don’t know why – I not overly afraid of needles). The nurse kindly reassured me that everything would be ok and that I would experience a little ‘stinging’ feeling. Just five minutes later and feeling excited about the impending change to my skin – I was advised about the gradual appearance of the effects of the treatment and told to do some facial exercises to ensure that the solution moved around the muscle to distribute it evenly.
A week later and I felt brand new! I was completely converted – no more creams or beauty fads. As far as I was and still am concerned, nothing else on the market offers better value for money.

The Reception Class, at Twyford School, had a surprise today when a giant toothbrush and toothpaste arrived to talk teeth! The children joined a discussion with Heleena and Amy from Thurlow about the importance of maintaining healthy teeth. We all agreed that you should brush twice a day for 2 minutes (which is 120 seconds as one pupil pointed put to us!).
We looked at healthy food and drink like fruit and milk, and also bad types, like chocolate which has sugar in it that can decay teeth. All the children admitted that chocolate tastes so good however, we must look after our teeth to keep healthy teeth as they have to last until maybe the age of 100!
We looked at dentures like Granny may wear and all agreed that by looking after our teeth from a very young age we may avoid having to wear these when we are older.
The Thurlow Team were very impressesd with the knowledge the children had already and enjoyed learning together with them more depth about healthy teeth for a healthy future.
Experience should count the most when you are job hunting, but these days it’s not necessarily as big an asset as you may think!
